Too much social media?

A topic that is hot in the news this week is the “over-use” of social media (Facebook, Twitter, Bebo, etc). But is there anything in this claim?

As a member of Facebook and Twitter, my first response was “that’s silly, I use it to keep in touch with people, nothing excessive”. And then I thought about it… I have an application for each on my phone, and I always load both accounts whenever I go online at home (even if I have nothing to update!). So, I use it often. But excessively? Hmm… I don’t think so.

However, my friend Steve is another matter altogether!

He has searched for various people on Facebook that share his name, and added them. He has no idea who these people are, or what they could do with his details. He has also gone so far as to find people with the same birthday, and add them. When people request him as a friend, he immediately adds them – then has a look to see if he knows them! And even if he doesn’t know them, 9 times out of 10, he’ll still keep them as a friend.

This type of usage is a security nightmare – but it is down to the responsible person to monitor their own usage, governing bodies should not be stepping in to tell them what to do.

But in the case of a child? … It’s a tough one to call.
